What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural occurrence that happens to you on a daily basis. Every time you are focused on what you are doing and you are barely aware of what is going on around you, you experience a hypnotic or light trance state. You will already have experienced hypnosis if; you have ever experienced a daydream, been so absorbed in a book or a film that your awareness of time and surroundings is reduced or having driven to a destination and not remembering large parts of your journey. Hypnosis is the experience some people have when waking in the morning, being aware of everything going on around them, yet still being in a very relaxed dream like state.

Hypnotic trance may occur naturally or may be induced by a professional Hypnotherapist or even self-hypnosis. You cannot be hypnotised against your will and it is only possible to enter into hypnosis when you are comfortable, relaxed, willing and ready to do so. It is also of outmost importance that you fully trust your therapist.

Once relaxed suggestions or imagery focus and concentrate the attention on a specific task or object with the exclusion of everything else. This narrowing of concentrated attention typically results in light trance being experienced, which may be further deepened to the required level. Trance depth varies with each individual from light through to deep.

With the mind calm, quiet and acutely focused a heightened state of inner awareness is experienced. In this state the conscious mind is suppressed or bypassed while the subconscious becomes highly accessible, alert, suggestible and compliant.

Within the hypnotic state one can by-pass the barriers to our inner thoughts and feelings, and suggestions are acted upon much more powerfully than is possible in a normal state of mind.

It is impossible for you to get “stuck” in a state of hypnosis, and you cannot be made to do something that is against your will.
